The ecological diversity of Oaxaca is beautifully varied; from Jaguar and mushroom inhabited mountain pine forests to cacti-dotted beaches teaming with hundreds of blue crabs. Lands of contrast produce the most beautiful and varied ecosystems. I chose to include orange Amanita mushrooms, also known as hongo de yema (yolk mushroom), because they are foraged in the Oaxaca mountains and made into yellow mole sauce. I worked on this painting mostly in Puerto Escondido at Jaguar Cafe. The delicious breakfast and the art making became part of my morning routine, something I love grounding into when staying a week or more in one place.
